How to Paint Tiger Stripes on a T-Shirt
So, I actually ventured out into the world and popped by my favorite craft store the other day. When you work from home, it’s easy to go into hermit mode….especially when you’re fortunate (like me) to live in a little patch of paradise.
Anyhoo…. I needed to get some more tie dye supplies and looky what I found. Fabric spray paint! That’s not really new but I’ve never tried them and they had a project sheet showing how to paint tiger stripes which looked like fun.

Fabric Painting Supplies:
– Fabric Spray Paint
– White or light colored T-Shirt
Also needed:
– Cardboard appr. size of shirt
– Newspaper or plastic to cover table
– Gloves (optional)
Paint the First Layer:
Cover your table with newspaper or plastic, if needed. Lay the shirt on the table and place the cardboard inside to keep the paint from bleeding through to the other side. (My cardboard is a little small lol)
We will use 2-3 colors plus the black. I picked Yellow, Pink and Orange.
Pick one of the 3 fabric paint colors, shake well and begin spraying a band of paint across the shirt. Do the same with the other 2 until the front of the shirt is completely covered. There is no right or wrong way to paint the shirt. Have fun with it.
Let the shirt dry for about 10 minutes, then turn it over and repeat on the back side, paying attention to the edges. Let dry for another 10 minutes.
Spray Paint Tiger Stripes
Gather and pleat the shirt, accordion style, folding as tightly as you can. The pleats don’t have to be the exact same size and probably look ‘more natural’ with variable widths.
Shake the bottle of black paint and spray in thin layers all across the shirt until it’s well covered. Let dry for 10 minutes. Carefully flip the shirt over (keeping the pleats together) and spray this side with the black paint. Again, let it dry for 10 minutes.
Unfold the shirt and see your fun, painted tiger stripes. According to the directions, the shirt is ready to wear in about an hour and can be machine washed after 72 hours.
