15 Free Crochet Market Bag Patterns

If you’re a Maker like me (and since you’re here, you probably are), you just love to make your own things, right? My motto is ‘I can make that’.

Well, I am on a DIY Market Bag kick. And so I went on a search for market bag crochet patterns that are free.

I have already made one out of an old tshirt (watch for that post soon) and now I want to crochet one. The best part is that all you need is some yarn, a crochet hook and an awesome free pattern.

In this day and age with our massive pollution problems, we all need to pitch in, don’t we? And one great way for everybody to help with the massive cleanup is to stop using those pesky, plastic grocery bags! Seriously, just stop it!

I get so irritated when the bagger puts just one little item in each bag! Then I end up hauling home 25 of the stupid things. So, at our house we made a pact. If you forget your reusable shopping bags at home, you have to buy another one.

I know I know it’s wasteful to buy another reusable bag. However, it’s not as bad as taking the disposable ones. Okay, enough preaching. Let’s go make some market bags.

What is a Market Bag?

Basically, a market bag is a large tote type bag that you use to carry your groceries. Usually, the base or bottom of a market bag is folded in order to hold more items and to hold them securely similar to a paper grocery sack.

What is a French Market Bag?

The way I understand it, a French Market Bag is an open weave, stitch or mesh type of material. I have heard of them referred to as Produce Bags and Farmers Market Bags. Also, French Market Bags or Produce Bags are often used as a beach bag since the open mesh allows the sand to fall through.

DIY Market Bags

There are a lot of different ways you can make your own market bags from sewing to crochet to macrame. I have also seen some no-sew options which I will share with you soon.

Personally, I really like the open weave Produce Bags or French Market Bags. Not only do they look cool, but they are much faster to crochet than a solid tote bag.
