Lemon Sugar Homemade Hand Scrub. I love making my own beauty recipes and here I made for you a super easy recipe for making your own Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub using all natural ingredients. Great DIY Gift Idea!
I don’t know about you guys, but between wet felting and taking care of alpacas and chickens, my hands take a beating in the winter. Dry, cracked skin is not fun so I thought I’d share my favorite homemade hand scrub recipe.
Not only does this hand scrub exfoliate your skin, it nourishes and softens it at the same time. If you have chronic dry skin (like my hubby), try scrubbing your hands with the sugar scrub at bedtime and wear soft gloves overnight.

– White sugar
– Olive Oil or Sweet Almond Oil
– Lemon Juice
– Lemon Extract or Lemon Essential Oil
– Sealable containers, I like to use Mason Jars
– Bowls, spoons, etc.
Mixing Your Homemade Hand Scrub:
This scrub recipe really doesn’t get any easier. All you need is one bowl and some spoons.
In a bowl, mix together 2 1/2 cups of white sugar, 2/3 cup oil, 2 Tablespoons lemon juice and 1 Tablespoon lemon extract or essential oil. Stir it all up. If the sugar scrub is too dry for you, go ahead and add a bit more oil. If the scrub is too wet, add some more of the sugar.
Finish Your Sugar Scrub:
When your scrub has the right consistency, all you have to do is spoon it into your mason jar or other sealable container and add a pretty ribbon.
These homemade hand scrubs make wonderful DIY gifts for Christmas, Mother’s Day or Birthdays. Anybody that works outside will appreciate a good hand scrub and love you forever. Know any Gardeners or Construction Workers?

My favorite scrub uses a base if honey and poppy seeds. You can add essential oils or other oils to it, but just those two ingredients are amazing for your skin. I use it on my face!
admin says
Oooh! That sounds yummy! Do you have it posted somewhere so I can share? Or would you share the recipe?
Jenn says

Terry says
I always wondered how they made those sugar scrubs. Now that I know, I need to make up a large batch and share it with my family.
admin says
These are especially good for anybody that gardens or works outside. Enjoy!
Kathy says
Can you use pure extracts if you do not have essential oils
admin says
Oh sure, extracts would be fine. I just wouldn’t use the scented oils for candle making and other crafts.
Eliz Frank says
My, my… that scrub looks good enough to eat. π Happy Valentine’s Day
admin says
You could!
Jacqueline says
I am hosting a babyshower in April and this is EXACTLY the type of party favor I am looking to make! Thanks for the idea and easy instructions. I plan on getting cheap little latch-top jars at Michaels π

Great idea Jacqueline! I’m posting my brown sugar vanilla body scrub next week π

Thanks for sharing! My hands are not really a problem for me, its my feet that gets really dry and cracked. I don’t know if its because of my diabetes that’s causing the dryness or what, but I will definitely give your lemon sugar scrub a try.
admin says
Works wonders on feet too. And feels so good π
Johnnalynn Lynch says
This is such a great gift idea and I cannot wait to try it! I had a guy shake my hand at a party once and say to me that my hands were “rough”. LOL! Even though I wanted to smack him, I had to agree. Washing dishes, cleaning and just doing every day things cause our hands to take such a beating. I’m dying for some soft hands! LOL! Thank so much for this!
admin says
Poor guy! Good thing he told you though!
Natalie says
What a cute, easy gift! I’m definitely going to round up these supplies and make some for myself and some friends. I love fragrances that are citrusy and non-floral, so this scrub is perfect for me!
admin says
Me too Natalie, I much prefer citrus to floral. This will work great with orange or even grapefruit essential oil.
Jaclyn says
Fun idea, great photos, easy instructions … Love this! Can’t wait to check out the rest of your blog!
admin says
Thanks Jaclyn!

My daughter made me some hand scrub for Christmas – Smelled so good! I’ll need to share this recipe with her. Thanks.
admin says
Ooh, what kind did she make?
Tink says
I am so going to try this out. I hate using lotions because of the “greasy” feel they leave behind (even the non-greasy ones), so I have just been putting up with dry hand. Now, will it work on feet?
admin says
It’s great on feet! Going to try and post my Brown Sugar scrub today.
Jennifer at Purposeful Nutrition says
My daughter has made me some sugar scrubs. The lemon one sounds wonderful. I love how it makes my skin feel after a shower with a sugar scrub.

Lemon is so refreshing!

This time of year – the hands in our house definitely need some extra loving…. this is a great way to show them the love, without breaking the budget! Thanks for posting!
admin says
You’re welcome!
Pam says
Great and simple recipe – I love a lavender scrub, lemon would be nice to have in the kitchen!
admin says
You could substitute lavender essential oil for the lemon. Actually, any of them would be great
stacey says
Surprisingly I have ALL the ingredients on hand. I’m so making this recipe, this weekend! I love sugar scrubs but hate the price tag of them in stores. Thank you for sharing this!
-Stacey
admin says
That’s what I like about it….I usually have all the ingredients. And it’s all natural unlike what you get at the store.
Lalia @ Found Frolicking says
I had NO idea it was so easy to make sugar scrub!!! I actually have a salt-based scrub in my house currently from Lush Cosmetics, and it was so pricey (I think the small container that’s about 1 cup was $30). My hands occasionally get dry, but it’s nothing compared to my husband who works with his hands constantly. I will have to make this for him, and make it for a few of my friends as a gift, too! Thank you for the wonderful DIY! I’m so excited to try this! I’m going to check out the brown sugar vanilla body scrub you mentioned, too! It sounds divine!
admin says
I’m so glad! My hubby and daughter both have extremely dry hands. They crack in the winter, but this helps a lot. By the way, I posted the brown sugar scrub yesterday
Sarah Barker (@sarahsfare) says
I just love DIY sugar scrubs – they are so easy and inexpensive to make, not to mention there’s a million varieties depending on what you like! And lemon has great antiseptic properties, so it is perfect for hands to keep them clean without harsh chemicals. Thanks for sharing!

Exactly! And the acid helps to restore the PH in your skin as well.
HilLesha says
I love making scrubs, but I have never tried making a lemon one before. I just might do that this weekend! π
admin says
Works great with any essential oil but I really like the citrus smell

I love homemade beauty products. I remember when I was younger buying a book all about DIY beauty/ bath/ spa ideas. Since then, I always try to make my own (but inevitably not as often as I’d like). I’ll be adding this to my to try list. π This time of year is tough on our skin, and anything that can help- especially chemical free- is a winner in my books!
admin says
I bet I have the same book! Some of those recipes call for weird, hard-to-find ingredients, though. I like to keep it simple π
Tonia says
Love the smell of lemon! This would really make a great gift for Christmas.
admin says
I give this and the brown sugar vanilla scrub to all my girls every Christmas
Shirley Wood says

I had no idea making scrubs were so easy–apart from being awesome to use personally, this is a great gift idea.

Thanks Nicole! Yes, they make wonderful gifts. My friends ask for them every year π
Jen Bradley says
My husband has horrible chapped hands this winter, and I don’t know what to tell him. We use Burt’s bee’s creams, but I’m going to have him try this.
Thanks!
admin says
Burt’s Bees is great. Give this a try tho and let me know how it works for him.
Faith Still says
Does the lemon juice sting? I have cracks on my hands from the winter weather and would worry that the lemon would sting. I know when I cook with lemon and have cracks on my hands it does sting.
admin says
Hi Faith, Yes it would sting. You could try a non-acidic essential oil like Lavender instead of the lemon
Jennifer @ The Jenny Evolution says
What a great idea! I could use this right NOW! My hands are suffering from the winter and need a break.
